Traveling Tokyo runs two sumo clubs on the west side of the city: the Shinjuku Sumo Club in Okubo and the Shibuya Sumo Club in Yoyogi. Both sell the same kind of evening, a short show with former wrestlers, a host who explains in English, a photo and water, without a meal. They are the shortest shows on this site, and the Shinjuku show is the most-reviewed sumo listing here (currently 4.9 ★ from 9,130 reviews).

About this experience

The format is the same short show with photo; water is provided.

What's included

  • Sumo show
  • Photo
  • Water

Meeting point

Shibuya Sumo Club, Yoyogi Broadway, near the east exit of JR Yoyogi station.

Facts from the operator's sumo listing as of October 2026; the booking platform shows the current terms.

Which of the two to book

The difference is mostly the address. The Shinjuku Sumo Club is in Okubo, north of Shinjuku station, with its entrance next to a Daiso shop. The Shibuya Sumo Club is in the Yoyogi Broadway building near the east exit of JR Yoyogi, one stop from Shinjuku on the Yamanote line. The Shinjuku show runs 75 to 90 minutes and the Shibuya show 75 minutes. Pick the one closer to your hotel or to where you plan to eat afterwards, since neither serves a meal.

Rules at the Shinjuku club

The Shinjuku listing sets out more rules than the Shibuya one. Six guests per show get to try the ring, drawn by lottery, so you may watch rather than wrestle. Latecomers are not let in. The venue is cashless, so bring a card for anything you buy there. The Shibuya listing does not state these points either way.

The hosts and the format

Reviewers of both clubs name their hosts and say they spoke clear English and explained the rules and history of sumo. The Shinjuku listing states that the show is not a real tournament, and a guest from Peru described the Shibuya show as a Western-style show made to make people laugh. For a meal with the show, the dinner shows are the alternative; for real training, the morning practice visits.

On price

The critical reviews of these shows are mostly about value: guests found the show fun but too expensive for what it is. The prices in the table above update from the booking platform and differ by date and time, so compare them there before you choose.
